How is the theme of Mardi Gras chosen?

In Galveston, Texas the theme is chosen by the Park Board early in the year usually right after Mardi Gras ends. All Galveston Krewes then must conform to that theme handed down by them. However, in New Orleans there is no general theme for Mardi Gras, other than having fun. Each individual parade depicts a specific subject or theme chosen by the Krewes. The Krewe sponsoring the parade determines their theme. All floats joining then reflect the Krewe's theme for that year. Members and whoever else joins in are then costumed in a manner illustrating the Krewe's overall parade theme and float title. This adds more variety and gayity to the Mardi Gras Adventure - you never know what's coming next!
