established since 1985

Galveston, TX

The Mystic Krewe of Aquarius was organized in March 1985 and is the second oldest Mardi Gras social organization since the revival of Mardi Gras in Galveston, Texas in 1984. February 1986 marked the Krewe's first Grand Ball at the Hotel Galvez and the Krewe's first appearance in a Parade.

In 1987, the City of Galveston extended Mardi Gras to include two weekends and the Mystic Krewe of Aquarius became the kick-off parade of the Mardi Gras season in Galveston. This parade has been a tradition on the 1st Saturday of the Galveston Mardi Gras season and is the longest and largest parade. Families start gathering on the Seawall the night before to make sure they have a great spot to see the parade and catch plenty of beads. The parade begins a Noon and parades from 14th/Seawall and continues down Seawall Blvd. to 59th Street.

Another honored tradition for the Mystic Krewe of Aquarius is a parade they sponsor on Fat Tuesday, which is justly titled "We End What We Begin". This parade notes the end of the Galveston Mardi Gras season. The parade begins at 6:30pm and parades through the historical Galveston Strand District. The Mysitc Krewe of Aquarius invites all the Krewes to participate in this parade, as well as marching bands. This parade has become another highlight in the Galveston Mardi Gras season because it gives Galvestonians a chance to see a parade in a casual atmosphere.

The Mystic Krewe of Aquarius prides itself on being a charitable Krewe. Each year the Krewe makes children's baskets and personally distributes them to the Shriner's Burn Hospital and the Children's wing at University of Texas Medical Branch - John Sealy Hospital. Krewe members show up in their costumes and parade through the hospitals bringing a smile to children's faces. The Mystic Krewe of Aquarius also is a co-sponsor of the Special People's Ball held each year at Moody Gardens. Disabled children and adults are brought into Moody Gardens from all over Texas to enjoy the fun and festivities of this Mardi Gras event. Beads are thrown, faces are painted and smiles are everywhere.

The Mystic Krewe of Aquarius' members participate throughout the year in fundraisers, media events, other parades and events throughout Galveston and the Houston Metro Area.
