“ THE RENAISSANCE “
In 2008 The Mystic Krewe of Aquarius will celebrate it’s 23rd anniversary with a colorful Celebration of “The Renaissance “. Aquarius, established in 1985 is the second oldest parading Krewe on Galveston Island. The Krewe’s inaugural parade was in 1987 and today’s parade still follows the same route on Seawall Boulevard. The Mardi Gras kick 0ff parade, As it is known, is one of the largest and the most colorful of all Mardi Gras parades and each year features over 80 units. Aquarius also sponsors and organizes the annual “ Fat Tuesday “ parade for all the Krewe’s to participate in and enjoy.
The Mystic Krewe of Aquarius Mardi Gras Coronation Ball and Royal Pageant will Be on Saturday January 12 at the Galveston Island Convention Center “Grand Ballroom”. This Popular black tie and costume event features a indoor costume procession and pageant show-casing the Royal Court members in spectacular costumes and trains. The evening begins with a 7 pm cocktail hour followed by the Coronation of King Alexander Saper and Queen Charlene Manning. Music for dancing will be provided by “Green Onions” until 1 am. The biggest party of them all, The Aquarius “ Barn Bash” will be on Friday January 25 at the Krewe float barn on 31st and ave, N ½ in Galveston. The party begins at 7pm with dance Music featuring “Bare Neccessities” until 11pm. Guest will be treated to a sneak preview of the Aquarius floats and a huge bead toss. There will be a “Texas” size buffet and drinks. Tickets are $15 21 and over and are available by calling 409-771-8529.
The Mystic Krewe of Aquarius Mardi Gras Kick off Parade will take to the streets at 12 noon on Saturday January 26. This will be the Krewe’s 21st annual Mardi Gras parade and will feature 30 floats and showcase 24 marching bands plus many others units from all over Texas. This colorful street pageant will dazzle the crowds and treat revelers to the most beads In all of Mardi Gras. Aquarius will showcase it’s seven theme decorated double decker floats and costumed krewe members and Royal Court in Full regalia. An Island favorite the Mystic Krewe of Aquarius “ Fat Tuesday” Parade will be on February 5 at 6:30 pm in historic downtown and the Strand District. This annual all Krewe Event will feature dozens of floats, Marching Bands and Drill Teams. This will be the 14th year that Aquarius has staged this parade in the final hours of the Mardi Gras. The Mystic Krewe of Aquarius boast a membership of 190 including active charter members Merlin Lidstone and Johnny Lidstone. Aquarius is mix of talented individuals who design and create their spectacular costumes. Aquarius owns a fleet of 9 floats in which they design and decorate each Mardi Gras according to the theme. This active Krewe meets twice a month and holds several fundraising events each year including the brisket sale and USO Show. The krewe is very social oriented and stages social events all year including the “Trolley Party” and Luau.
Aquarius, is under the leadership of Officers Johnny Lidstone; Captain, Ron Dyda; Vice President, Fran Grabiel; Secretary and Rhonda Sykes; treasuer. The executive Board members are Harry Milo, Patty Collier. John Berend, Michael Mckinney, Stephanie Blasé, Pat Saenz, Charles Shearrow, Tony Flores, Speedy Dobranich. Sgt at Arms is Terry Robinson, alternate Jackie Friesenhahn.
2008 Parade captain is Johnny Lidstone and Assistants are Stella Bennett and Ron Dyda. The Float Captains are Tally Fish, Fran Grabiel, Chip Shearrow, Pat Saenz, Hope Cooke, Andy Kerstens, Patty Collier,Mari Berend and Rhonda Sykes.
Members of the Krewe’s “Diamond Club” include Alice Tarifa, Valerie Mancuso, Pat Katrausky, Bernard Diaz, Merlin Lidstone and Carmen Epley. These are our treasured members 75 years of age and over.
